TESE

The Basics

TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) is a technique used to get sperms directly from the testicle through a biopsy and removing a small amount of tissue that can then be used for IVF-ICSI. This technique is used when there are no sperms found in the semen analysis report (azoosperia).

When is TESE used in men?

  • History of a vasectomy
  • No sperm in your semen analysis report:
    • azoosperia or no sperms in the semen analysis report
  • Blockage of tube that carries sperm from testicles to penis
  • Testicles not producing sperm
  • Multiple IVF failures due to poor sperm quality

Treatment

TESE is a minor procedure and can be done within 15 minutes. It is mostly done with general anesthesia in the operating room. It is an outpatient procedure and you can go home on the same day. In the procedure your Genova male infertility specialist will remove tissue from your testicle. The embryologist will then recover sperm from the tissue and use it for IVF-ICSI procedure.

Success rate of TESE depends on severity of the issue and can be anywhere between 20-100% in retrieving sperms.
