PGT/PGD/PGS

The Basics

Pre-implantation Genetic Testing/Diagnosis/Screening is performed during the IVF-ICSI procedure, where a cell or two are taken from an embryo by way of a biopsy and sent to a specialized genetic lab for testing and analysis. PGT helps identify any hereditary genetic disorders in the embryos so the healthiest embryo is chosen for transfer and implantation in an IVF-ICSI cycle.

Treatment

PGT is performed during the IVF cycle when multiple eggs are retrieved from the female, injected with the husband’s sperm (IVF-ICSI) to form embryos. Once the embryos are 5 to 6 days old, a biopsy is taken and sent for genetic testing in a specialized lab. The lab analysis the embryo samples and identifies the healthiest embryos. Your reproductive consultant with the assistance of your embryologist will then choose the healthiest embryos to transfer, reducing the risk of having a baby with predisposed genetic condition.

When should you do PGT?
• When female age is above 38 and there have been cases of multiple miscarriages
• If there is a history in the family of genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia
• Parents chromosomes are structurally compromised
