The Basics
In a conventional IVF procedure, a woman’s egg is combined with a man’s sperm in a controlled environment in the embryology lab in hopes that they meet and fertilize. Whether the sperm meets the egg and fertilization occurs depends on many factors and chance. To increase the chance of fertilization, especially in cases where male fertility is an issue because of the quality or quantity of sperm, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Infusion or ICSI is used. In ICSI-IVF instead of waiting for the sperm to meet the egg, our expert embryologist will inject a single healthy sperm into the egg. This extra step taken in our lab increases the chance of fertilization.
ICSI is done in the embryology lab so your experience will be same as undergoing a conventional IVF procedure. You don’t have to prepare for it differently.

Treatment
We use ICSI-IVF when:
- Sperm count is low
- Sperm may not move properly
- Sperm are not connecting with the egg
- Sperm are not released naturally because of blockage
- Conventional ivf has been unsuccessful in the past
- Frozen eggs are being utilized
- Couples have been diagnosed with “unexplained infertility”
What is the success rate of ICSI-IVF?
ICSI-IVF is a highly effective method to fertilize eggs. The fertilization rate for ICSI is over 80% therefore it improves your fertility success rate significantly. However, fertilization and having a successful pregnancy are two different things. It should be noted that having a successful pregnancy still depends on many other factors such as age of the woman and other existing conditions.
